The Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity Stakes is a Grade I American thoroughbred horse race held annually in early October. The place is at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky. Currently offering a purse of $400,000, the race is open to two-year-old horses and is run at a distance of one mile and a sixteenth on dirt, and nowadays, the race is also part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series. The winner automatically qualifies for the TVG Juvenile presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance.

The speed record for the race’s current distance is by Polar Expedition, who won the Breeders’ Futurity in 1: 42.20 in 1993. The 10-length winning margin recorded by Gold Stage in 1979 is also a record. Jockey Don Brumfeld and trainer D. Wayne Lukas have added a record five and six wins each in the race, respectively.

What can we expect at the Claiborne Breeders ‘Futurity Stakes?

Corniche, a son of Quality Road, earned 98 Beyer Speed Figure for his 4 1/4-length debut victory in a speed race at Del Mar on Sept. 4. Rockefeller, a son of Medaglia d’Oro, was a 2 1/2-length maiden winner on Aug, 28. Meanwhile, Flying Drummer, a son of Gun Runner, remains a maiden after finishing second in his two starts.

Outside of the Baffert trio, Oviatt Class might be the most interesting juvenile candidate in the American Pharoah field. He took advantage of an early pace to circle the field and win a one-mile maiden race at Del Mar. In his case, the movement was similar to that of Texas Red, who in 2014 won the BC Juvenile with a similar sustained run. The Oviatt class, like Texas Red train with Keith Desormeaux.

Pletcher already has a slot in the juvenile starting gate occupied with Major General. In addition, Pletcher plans to run Double Thunder and Keepcalmcarryon in the Breeders ‘Futurity to see if either is worthy of taking to California.
