2024 Hero World Challenge Favorites

The tournament features the best golfers in the world, so we can’t discuss contenders without starting with Scottie Scheffler. The American, the defending champion, has had an outstanding 2024, winning seven tournaments, most notably the Masters. Additionally, he claimed the gold medal at the Olympics.

Scheffler was ranked number one for 2024, and his most recent tournament was in early September, where he secured the Tour Championship. Alongside Justin Thomas, he is one of the only players in the field with multiple Majors, having also won the Masters in 2022.

And talking about Thomas, he is another top contender. While he hasn’t won a title in two years, his experience is enough to make him a strong candidate. His best result this year was a second-place finish at the ZOZO Championship in late October, which was also his most recent tournament. He also achieved five additional Top 10 finishes in 2024.

With 15 career titles, Thomas is the most accomplished golfer in the field, surpassing even Scheffler, who has 13 titles.

Lastly, we include Wyndham Clark in our shortlist of three contenders. The 30-year-old American secured his third career title in 2024 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. He also ranked fourth in earnings this year, behind Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, and Hideki Matsuyama.

In addition to his victory, Clark finished second at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and THE PLAYERS Championship, and he achieved five other Top 10 finishes. His last tournament was the Procore Championship in mid-September, where he failed to make the cut.

2024 Hero World Challenge Outside picks

With eight titles, Patrick Cantlay is also one of the most accomplished players in the tournament. However, he hasn’t celebrated a victory since 2022. This year, he finished in the Top 10 in four tournaments, with his standout performance being a third-place finish at the U.S. Open.

Robert MacIntyre had an impressive year. The Scottish golfer claimed his first two PGA Tour titles, winning the Genesis Scottish Open and the RBC Canadian Open. He also achieved four additional Top 10 finishes, including an eighth-place result at the PGA Championship.

Lastly, we have Ludvig Åberg. The Swedish golfer, who earned his sole PGA Tour title last year, was the runner-up three times in 2024: at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, the BMW Championship, and most heartbreakingly, the Masters. He recently competed in the RSM Classic, finishing in 17th place. While it wasn’t his best result, the positive takeaway is that he arrives with competitive momentum, unlike many other players on the field.
