Australian Open 2024 Preview

The Australian Open 2024 edition is currently going on, as both the Men and Women’s Singles make their way to wrap up the first stage of competition.

This time, the event is a Grand Slam to be held at Melbourne Park, from 14–28 January 2024. As you can see, the qualification matches in the first round are already on their way, but the main event, taking place on the 14th, is right around the corner.

It is the 112th edition of the competition, the 56th in the Open Era, and the first major of the year. The tournament consists of matches for professional players in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles.

Australian Open 2024 – Event Preview

The tournament will feature the following changes from previous tournaments:

• First-round matches will take place over three days, instead of two.
•  The daytime sessions on the central courts, Rod Laver Arena and Margaret Court Arena, will feature a maximum of two matches instead of three to avoid games lasting into the early hours of the morning, such as the duel between Andy Murray and Thanasi Kokkinakis in 2023, which ended at 4:05 am local time. The John Cain Arena schedule remains the same.
•  The number of game sessions for the event has increased from 47 to 52 with the extra day of competition.

For the Men’s Singles, Novak Djokovic is the defending champion.

Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev are in contention for the ATP No. 1 singles ranking.

When we take a look at the Women’s Singles, we can see that Aryna Sabalenka is the defending champion.

Also, for the first time in the tournament’s history, there are six former champions in the main draw: Sabalenka, Naomi Osaka, Sofia Kenin, Caroline Wozniacki, Angelique Kerber, and Victoria Azarenka.

Four of the former champions (Osaka, Wozniacki, Kerber, and Azarenka) are also mothers.
