Jesse Rodriguez vs. Carlos Cuadras

The American Jesse “Bam” Rodríguez gave an enormous demonstration of quality this Saturday, February 5, 2022, at the Footprint Center located in Phoenix, where he achieved an excellent victory against the Mexican Carlos Cuadras, former world champion, by unanimous decision after 12 well-contested rounds.

In this fight the vacant world title of the WBC super flyweight category was at stake and thanks to the victory, Rodríguez became the youngest champion of this division today since he is only 22 years old.

Although Jesse Rodríguez started as the betting favorite, he had to overcome some questions that had surrounded him, it was his first fight in this category in 3 years, since, he had been fighting in the flyweight division, it was the first time he was fighting for a title and, most importantly, he only had 5 days of preparation, since he met his rival in the last week because he replaced the Thai Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, who was originally going to be Cuadras’ rival.

Although the experience of Carlos Cuadras was what mattered most to him in this fight, from the beginning of the encounter, the undefeated Jesse Rodríguez (who came in with 14 victories) was very dominant and much better planted, taking the initiative with impressive hitting speed and phenomenal footwork, against a Cuadras who could never assert his greater power and size.

Throughout the fight, Rodríguez knew how to mark territory and resist when it was his turn. He started strong, setting the pace, and with a body shot in the fourth round, he sent Cuadras to the canvas. The Mexican was not far behind and tried to come back and bring out his experience and once the fight was over he got more work done. That did not bother the young American, who knew how to hold on well and with rhythm stopped the Mexican veteran.

Jesse Rodríguez, who had never passed the eighth round in his career, closed the fight with great security and confidence, reaching the end of the fight knowing that the victory was in his pockets and he would only have to wait for the scores of the judges, two of them saw a 117-110, while another saw a more even 115-112. In all cases in favor of the American, who remained undefeated and scored his name among the best of the super flyweights.
